Ban Pit Bulls

This time it wasn’t a pit bull it was its cousin the American bull dog. For anyone who hasn’t seen an American bull dog they look very much like a pit bull terrier only bigger and more muscular if you can imagine. 4 year old Tori Whitehurst was swinging in her backyard when her nanny went inside and left her alone with the dogs. Apparently the dog got jealous because Tori was playing with some dogs that were visiting and being cared for by her family. When the nanny came back outside she tried to get the dog off of Tori by spraying it with a hose but it would not let go.

When the Maricopa County sheriff’s office arrived at the house they tazed the dog and then shot it. One thing you can be sure of when one of Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s men arrives at any place of a disturbance is that something or someone is going to die. The Sheriff’s office here does not mess around, their motto is kill ‘em all and let God sort ‘em out. In this case it was probably the best thing to do, since any dog that kills a person needs to be put down. They just took care of it sooner rather than later.

I can’t begin to imagine how this little girls parents feel right now, but I am sure they are regretting having a dog like that in the presence of their 4 year old little girl. I really don’t understand the need to keep animals like pit bulls and American bull dogs as pets. You have to know that there are only two possible outcomes from having a dog like that near your family. One is that you will be worried all the time that something bad may happen and live with an upset stomach. Or two that something terrible like this actually does happen and you have to live with the regret for the rest of your life. I guess there is some insatiable need that some people have that makes them want to own the meanest looking dog on the entire block. I wonder if it was worth it for the Whitehurst’s.

What happened in Phoenix is just another sad event involving dogs that should quite simply be outlawed. I hate government intervention into the lives of private citizens, but we have laws for a couple of reasons. Laws protect society from people who may otherwise choose to harm society, and to protect people from themselves. Outlawing dangerous dogs, especially blue pit bulls will not only protect innocent citizens form possible attack but will protect stupid people from themselves. In this country we have a right to choose. Let’s all learn to make better choices.

I went looking for pit bulls for sale to get a little information about what specific breeders were claiming about their dogs, and couldn’t believe what huge business pit bulls are. I found some really incredible prices for pit bulls, which actually made me wonder where people would get the kind of money they are asking for a dog. I truly could not believe the first site I saw that was asking between 8 and 10 thousand for a dog. I love dogs and think that the amount of love they give to a person is priceless, but 10 grand for a dog seemed insane to me. Pit bulls are far more popular than I ever thought they were if people are willing to lay out that kind of dough for them. The dogs that were demanding the highest prices were male blue pit bulls. I guess the need for a good stud dog comes at a very high price.

It also made me realize that these dogs were not bred for fighting. Maybe their offspring will be destined for the pit but at these prices I am sure that these dogs will be well coddled and taken care of. I also realized through my search that pit bulls are advertised with a distinct type of site. These pit bull breeders are deliberately marketing these dogs as tough and with characteristics that only a person who is looking for an intimidating dog would be inspired by. The blue pit bulls that I saw for sale were all marketed as being very large and with the dimensions of their heads being very important. I guess I am not sure what that does for the pit bull except maybe it would keep the other dogs from being able to bite their giant heads off. And I have to assume that the larger the dog is the more weight it has to push a smaller dog around.

If there is any question about how pit bulls are marketed then just do a little research into pit bulls for sale and you may be just as surprised as I was to find out how valuable pits bulls really are. Trying to ban pit bulls may be an uphill battle against an industry with potentially deep pockets.

A 42 year old woman was killed recently by her 2 family pets.  Both pit bull terriers that had never shown tendencies of being aggressive.  Isn’t this always the story when you hear about another senseless death involving a pit bull?  The pit bulls that rip a child’s face to pieces or just seem to attack someone for no reason always do so for the very first time when it becomes news.  This most recent story is being reported out of Middleburg Florida, after a 21 year old comes out of the shower to find his mother laying in the back yard covered in blood and calls 911.  During the 911 tape you can hear the boy going out back and trying to get the dogs away from his mother when the dogs turn on him and the connection to 911 is lost.  Eventually deputies show up and kill both of the dogs, but unfortunately it is too late for Tina Marie Canterbury.  Another death at the jaws of a killing machine.

Right now everyone is up in arms about the cruelty that Michael Vick imposed on some of his pit bulls, so I won’t go into why I think he was doing the world a favor by killing those animals so as not to offend anyone.  I do understand that what Michael Vick was doing was cruel and illegal, but not any crueler than what is done legally to animals in this country every day.  My concern right now is what we as a nation can do to rid ourselves of these killing machines.  Anyone who thinks that a pit bull would make a nice family pet is kidding themselves; these animals need to be barred from existence.  We pass laws that make it illegal to spit on a sidewalk, so surely we can pass a law that makes it illegal to own, posses or otherwise harbor a vicious killing machine.

This website will be my mission to uncover all of the stories I can find about pit bulls either killing and viciously attacking a person and report them all here.  Further I am making it my goal to eventually get all pit bulls outlawed in the United States.  I am quite positive that with enough support we can make this a very plausible goal.  I am a dog lover, but I am truly sickened by the wanton carelessness of pit bull owners, and by the breed itself.  Something needs to be done to cure this ill and this is where I will start.  Feel free to leave any comments you wish, I am sure that there are many people who will take offense to having pit bulls outlawed and you can feel free to leave your comments also just please be respectful while doing so.
